About the Project

The Burns Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Burns name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Burns name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Burns's), by time period (18th Century Burns's), or by topic (Burns DNA, Burns Occupations, Burns Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

My farthest back Burns ancestor is Charles Burns (b 1710 in Scotland/Ireland, d1789 in Henry Co. VA). He was married to MaryAnn Webb in 1745 and then Ann Rea in 1774? He had 6 sons and 3 daughters: Alexander Abner, John Arthur, Charles Jr., Samuel L., William Madison, Andrew S. Ann Frances (m. John Jett), Susan (m. John Crosby Sr.), and Elizabeth (m. turner Mason). The second son John Arthur is my 3rd GGfa (b. 1750 in VA, d. 1805 in NC). I can trace this line through William Burns my 2nd GGfa (b. 1779 in VA, d.1879 in TN), to William Columbus my GGfa (b. 1829 in TN, d.1905 in TX), to John Lemuel my Gfa (b.1872 in TN, d. 1943 in TX), to my mother Nancy Virginia (b. 1927 in TX, d. 2023 in WA). I am interested in collaborating to see if we can trace this line back to Scotland/Ireland. There is a lot of speculation out there, but nothing has been confirmed. Thank you...

I would love to help with this given that I am a Burns but I descend from Henry Burns born 1764 in Lancaster, PA. His father was Ernst Born (see https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:6CTT-RH1V) who was born in Germany about 1735. The name appears to have changed from Born to Burns with Ernst or Henry. I do have a lot of Scot in my DNA but I don't think it was from Burns.

If anyone has more compelling information to the contrary, please let me know!

Would love to join this group studying the Burns name and variations. My father, Henry Amedeo Burns, was son of Henry Howard Burns and his second wife Mary Campagna. Henry Howard Burns was born in Austin, TX, then relocated to the San Francisco area in the late 1920a. My father was born in San Francisco in 1930.

Hello all. My ancestor, John Burns married Anne Barrett (Irish) in 1846 in Portland area, Victoria, Australia. I cannot find a birth or death for John Burns but I think he was born in Ireland. There is no record of his death in Victoria but there is a John Burns 1856 death listed on the Old Casterton Cemetery board. His wife died in that area. However, when I contacted the Casterton Historical society, they said that the only 1856 Burns death there, was a James Burns with a different wife & children. He could possibly be the John Burns (20yo) who arrived at Port Phillip Bay in Feb 1842 on the Thetis but I can't confirm this. Any help appreciated ... thanks.
